The MSGEQ7 can be connected to an audio source (normal line levels) such as a CD player or a mp3 player or even a PC. It can then measure component frequencies in seven bands, 63Hz, 160Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 6.25kHz and 16kHz. The seven frequencies are peak detected then muliplexed to the output to provide a DC representation of the amplitude of each band.
The chip requires power between 2.7 and 5.5 volts. The multiplexor is controlled by a RESET and a STROBE line. The read rate controls the decay time, which is 10% per read.
